haring

Japan and the Netherland have other thing in common beside the fact that once they used to colonized Indonesia, that is raw fish!

The Japanese are world-famous for their sushi, the raw fish delicacy. And yes, although not as famous as sushi, the Netherland also have similar raw fish delicacy, the haring. Haring is a fish rich with omega-3 fatty acid, mostly found in North Sea. And traditionally, the Nederlander eat them raw. Why, i don't know. Not only eating them raw, they also have this specific way of eating them. You have to stand up, and held the haring high in your hand, and slump it all into your mouth. Yes, just like that. Why, don't ask me. It's just the way it used to be for a long time.

I tried sushi, and i don't like it. I like Japanese food except for sushi. So when my Iranian friend say that she loves, loves haring, i was a bit skeptical. I mean, raw fish is not my cup of tea. But yeah, why not try it first and decide later? Maybe this one is different. So i bought this raw haring, preserved in vinegar with some herbs, only to forget all about it until today when another friend of mine say that i can use haring for salad too. It reminds me that i have haring too at home.

So, this is my haring in a jar...

dan this is how the fish looks like:

and this is how you supposed to eat them:

And no, i didn't eat them standing up and slump it into my mouth. I use the plate. And no, i don't like it the way i predict that i won't. I try to eat them raw, but the rancid smell of the fish is too strong and i don't like the taste of its vinegar too. Finally i try to microwave them in 1 minutes, and find it more bearable to eat than before. So yeah, the verdict is, not my cup of tea. I'd rather eat sushi i guess :p

ps: all pictures are mine except for the one i credited
