When I Grow Up I Want to be a Writer

Bianglala writing with her father's computer :)
Last night, out of the blue, suddenly Bianglala told me,'Mim, I want an iPhone.'
I said,'Why on earth an eight years old girl want an iPhone? No, i will not give it to you, you have to earn it.'
Bianglala, sulked,'I love to play games in it (Games! Playing games on a very expensive gadget?-me screaming on my head ) With my current pocket money (i gave her 3 euro per week, only if she does her chores well), it would takes years to get it.'
I shrugged,'Yeah, so what's the problem?'
Bianglala,'I want it now.'
'You can't have it now. You don't have money for it, and i don't think you really need it'
Then Bianglala went on telling me about her friend, Flor, who told her that she would save her money for an iPod (really, what's with these girls and Apple products?) which Bianglala told her that it would take her ages to get it.
'It took her two years actually for an iPod,' I interrupted her.
'Really?'
'Yeah, an iPod is like 200 euro or so, so with 3 euro per week, you can save like 12 euro per month, and 144 euro per year, it's 288 euro for two years. It's enough for an iPod.'
'Two years is not very long.'
'No, I don't think it's a lifetime long.'
'Hmm, how long do I have to save for an iPad?'
'Five years.'
'For an iPhone?'
'Seven years.'
'For an iMac?'
'Ten years.'
'Ten years! That's very long!'
'Yeah, you would get it when you're 18, which I think is an appropriate time,' I grinned.
'But if I save for an iMac then I cannot buy presents for my friends! I already spend 6 euro for Doortje's birthday and I think I have to save the same amount for Robin's birthday! I don't think i will ever have enough money for an iPhone or an iMac!'
Bianglala received 3 euro pocket money per week, and she only received it when she does her chores. Sometimes i reduced the money sometimes i add it, it depends on how many chores she did. For all of her expenses, like buying toys, magazine, buying presents for her friends, she need to save from that pocket money.
'How come you could buy an iPhone!' she asked, accusingly.
'I am using my own money.'
'So, how am I going to get money like you.'
'People work,' i replied
'What kind of work people do?' she asked, eagerly, i can see ideas sparkling from her head.'Does what Abi do is also working? It's FUN! (Bianglala went to her father's lab couple of times and her father reported to me that she likes it there).
'Yeah, he's been getting money for it.'
'Hmm, what did YOU do when you were working?'
'Hmm, i worked for a company that sells things, and i helped them sell it.' (Sounds like an uninteresting job, even in my ear, eh :p).
She blinks,'Did you get lots of money from it?'
'Well, enough i think. I remember that i can buy my first mobile with my first salary,' I grinned, remembering my big (by today's standard) ugly Siemens.
'You can also works as a teacher, like Juf Leonie,' I told her,'Or like om Bas,' referring to my 'anak kos','He's a lawyer.'
'Hmm,' she still think.'Does people get some money if they write?'
'Yes, as the matter of fact, J.K. Rowling ( I pointed to Harry Potter's book that she just recently read) is one of the richest woman in the world, thanks to her writing.'
'Really?'
'Yeah, I think she can buy iPhone as many as she wanted to.'
'Wow! And how many that she owned?'
'I don't know, perhaps only one.'
'Why?!'
'Why she need more than one mobile?'
'Hmm, you're right. But perhaps she can buy as many as she want, and send it to Sinterklaas, so Sinterklaas can send it to us!'
'You wish!' I laughed
'So, if your writings are good enough, you will get some money for it?'
'Yeah, I think that's the idea.'
'Wow, I think I want to be a writer then!'
I reminded her that she used to want to become a veterinarian, but i guess the idea of J.K. Rowling with lots of money is just too appealing ^^
'Mom, how about the cover of the book? Who should do it?'
I then explained to her how books being published. An author go to a publisher, then the publisher help the author with an editor (that's also a job, i told her), an then the publisher asked a designer (also a job) to make some cover design which the author and the publisher will choose for the books.
'So, can i become the designer and the author?'
'Yes, some people did that. Some people like Abi, who works in the lab or teaching also wrote books.'
'Really?Why?'
'Yes, so what they learn can be learned by other people.'
'Hmmm, that's nice too.'
'Well, if you're insist that you will become an author, you have to practice, then. Should i teach you how to make a blog?'
'Yes, please.'
So i teach her how to make a blog which she mastered in no time. After i teach her how to make a blog, she made another one on her own. She also set her own profile complete with her profile picture. She keep working on it long after I fall asleep. In the morning, i saw her work, and couldn't be more proud. So, Bianglala the writer wannabe now have her own blog, bianglalasworld.blogspot.com and tetehshello-world.blogspot.com ( i think she fills only the latter with some writing, i believe she want to turn it into travelling blog :D). Let's see :)
